This is a hotel room I stayed in recently, with the desk facing away from the window.
This is fine at night, but in the day the difference in light is huge – 60 lux compared to 2,266 nearer the window.

These differences may appear trivial but we were not designed to see such little light.

Light at the right time is essential for both focus *and* the timing of other behaviours, like sleep.

So in this case I tore myself away from the lovely brown wallpaper and went to work in a cafe, where incidentally the coffee was better too.
