So what does human creativity look like in the age of AI?

I am going to suggest something like this.

This is Andrew O’Donnell, one of the most talented artists in Britain today.

A filmmaker, he started writing music for his own films.

Now his band Beluga Lagoon makes astonishing music which brings the majesty of Scotland’s landscapes to life.

These are songs deeply immersed in place and time, stemming from someone who is himself deeply immersed.  His music is an extension of his love of Scotland’s rugged landscapes.

“I spend a lot of time away from the family working on my own, and that tends to inspire what I write about…meaning my music is legitimately set in the wild. The flavour and the sound are inspired by Scotland’s outdoors and my adventures.”

In my book I argue that the future belongs to those who can immerse themselves in something – and those who can focus long enough to do that.

You’ll see lists of skills that will be needed in the future. But you’ll rarely see the ability to focus on those lists.

Yes, those who plug into the matrix may have all the knowledge known to humankind, but they’ll end up spouting the same, rootless ideas that humans instinctively perceive as disposable, fake.

Those who can immerse themselves in something will be in demand because they see things and do things that other people – and AI – cannot do.

They will also deepen the experience of those around them, and add meaning and value from doing that.

My family loves open air swimming (well in fairness my wife only sometimes).

And this summer we swam in many lochs and seas together, and as we did we sang:

𝘈𝘩 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺…
𝘈𝘴 𝘐 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘭s
𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸
𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮…
𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘢𝘬 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘴,
𝘈 𝘵𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘴

For anyone interested here are 7 beautiful Beluga Lagoon songs about Scotland’s landscapes:

  1. The Glen
  2. Pools and Tins
  3. The Burn
  4. Hebridean Breeze
  5. Monarch
  6. To a Place
  7. The Hawk

And here’s a playlist.
